The Helmet Standard Protecting Me Was Written When I Was a Kid

DOT FMVSS 218 hasn't changed since 1974. Minor amendments in 1988. That's it.

The federal standard governing the helmet I'm required by law to wear is older than decades of my riding. It predates everything we've learned about traumatic brain injury in the last 40 years.

It has no rotational impact testing.

What That Means

Linear impact testing measures how well a helmet absorbs a straight-on hit. Rotational impact testing measures what happens when your head twists on impact. That twisting motion is what causes diffuse axonal injury – the kind of brain damage that leaves you breathing but not there.

When you go down, your head doesn't hit square. It glances, it slides, it rotates. The injury mechanism DOT doesn't test for is the one most likely to destroy you.

ECE 22.06, mandatory in Europe as of January 2026, includes oblique impact testing for rotational forces. The research showed it mattered, so they updated the standard.

We didn't.

What It Feels Like to Know That

I wear a helmet because the law requires it and because I'm not stupid. But I also know the standard it's certified to doesn't measure the thing most likely to kill me.

You can buy an ECE 22.06 helmet in the US. Most will have a DOT sticker too, because manufacturers selling here need that certification. But you have to know to look for the ECE label. Most riders don't know there's a difference. I didn't, for years.

I ride with pulmonary fibrosis. Every ride carries the background knowledge that my lungs are failing and there's no fix. You'd think that would be the thing I'm thinking about. It's not. What I think about is that the systems meant to keep me alive on the road – AEB that can't see motorcycles, helmet standards that don't test for the primary injury mechanism – were built without me in the requirements.

Dying of a terminal illness is one thing. Dying because nobody required the safety equipment to actually work for motorcyclists is something else.

The Regulatory Choice

NHTSA operates on manufacturer self-certification. Helmet makers test their own products against the DOT standard and stick a sticker on them. NHTSA does random post-market spot checks. There's no mandate to update the standard, and updating it would mean manufacturers have to redesign helmets and testing rigs to meet the new requirements.

So it stays 1974.

The Europeans moved to oblique impact testing because the research showed rotational force matters more than linear impact for predicting real-world brain injury. We have access to the same research. We just haven't acted on it.

That's not a technical limitation. It's a policy choice. And the people absorbing the cost of that choice are the ones who go down and don't come back the same.

What I Actually Do

I bought an ECE 22.06 helmet. It has the DOT sticker because it's sold in the US, but it also passed rotational impact testing. I didn't learn about the difference from a safety campaign or a riding course. I learned it because I read crash research and got angry about what wasn't required.

Most riders don't do that. They buy a helmet at a dealership, see the DOT sticker, and assume it's been tested for the thing that kills. It hasn't. It's been tested for the thing that's easy to measure with 1970s equipment.

I ride knowing that every car's AEB system probably can't detect me. I ride knowing the helmet on my head passed a test that doesn't measure rotational force. I ride knowing the Europeans required both and we didn't.

I ride anyway, because riding is the thing that still feels like being alive. But I'm not confused about what I'm trusting. I'm trusting a 50-year-old standard written before we understood the injury, required by people who didn't think to update it, sold to riders who don't know it's incomplete.

That's not protection. That's compliance theater. And I'm the one wearing it.
