The turn you see coming

THE TURN YOU SEE COMING

Late evening, September 4. Lomas and Louisiana. A motorcyclist heading westbound, a sedan heading eastbound, turning left onto Louisiana. The sedan turned in front of the rider. T-bone collision. The rider wore a helmet, was ejected, transported to UNM Hospital in critical condition, and died from the injuries. Alcohol wasn't a factor (Albuquerque Police Department, Sep 4, 2026).

This is the collision riders are taught to expect and the one that keeps killing them anyway.

What happened

The sedan was eastbound on Lomas, turning north onto Louisiana. The motorcyclist was westbound on Lomas, approaching the intersection. The sedan turned left across the motorcyclist's path. The motorcycle struck the sedan's side – a T-bone impact, which means the rider had no time or space to avoid it. Ejection means the impact was severe enough to separate the rider from the bike. A helmet was worn. The rider still died.

This wasn't rider error in the way most people think of it – no speeding, no alcohol, no recklessness mentioned in the report. This was a failure of the left-turning driver to yield, and a failure of the rider's available reaction time to close the gap between seeing the threat and surviving it.

The pattern

Left-turn collisions account for a disproportionate share of fatal and serious motorcycle crashes. The scenario is consistent: a vehicle turning left across an oncoming motorcycle's path, the driver claiming they didn't see the rider. "Sorry, mate, I didn't see you" – SMIDSY, in motorcycling shorthand. It's common enough to have an acronym.

The physics are straightforward. A motorcycle is smaller, harder to judge for speed and distance, and doesn't trigger the same threat response in a driver's peripheral vision that a larger vehicle does. Drivers look, process what they see as "safe to turn," and execute the turn – while a motorcycle they didn't consciously register is closing the distance at 40 or 50 miles per hour.

By the time the rider sees the car turning, the decision has already been made. The rider's options collapse to: brake hard and hope there's enough space, swerve if there's a lane to swerve into, or brace for impact. In an urban intersection, at speed, with a car already committed to the turn, "enough space" often doesn't exist.

What the gear can and cannot do

The rider wore a helmet. That helmet did its job – it protected the head during the initial impact and the ejection. Helmets reduce the risk of death in crashes by 37% and the risk of head injury by 69% (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Traffic Safety Facts 2019; Cochrane systematic review, 2008). This rider wore one, and still died.

A helmet is not body armor. It doesn't protect the torso, the spine, the pelvis, or the internal organs from the deceleration forces of a T-bone impact at intersection speeds. Ejection means the rider's body separated from the bike and continued forward until it struck the ground, the curb, or another object. That secondary impact – rider to pavement – carries its own injury profile, and a helmet alone doesn't prevent blunt force trauma to the chest, abdomen, or spine.

The lesson isn't "helmets don't work." The lesson is "a helmet is necessary and insufficient." The rider did the right thing by wearing it. The crash was survivable only if it hadn't happened at all.

Training versus reality

In basic rider training, left-turn scenarios are covered: watch for vehicles waiting to turn, cover your brakes, make yourself visible, assume the driver doesn't see you. In the real environment, those tactics compress into milliseconds. A driver who has already started the turn isn't going to stop because a rider covered the brakes. Visibility doesn't matter if the driver looked, didn't process the motorcycle as a threat, and turned anyway.

The gap between "trained response" and "available time to execute it" is where riders die.

This wasn't a case of a rider doing something obviously wrong. Westbound on Lomas, approaching an intersection, wearing a helmet – those are the conditions of normal riding. The failure was the left-turning driver's, and the rider paid for it with a fatal impact they had no realistic chance of avoiding.

What actually prevents this

Infrastructure: protected turn phases, bike-specific signal timing, intersection design that forces drivers to look twice. None of that exists at most Albuquerque intersections.

Enforcement: penalties severe enough that a driver who turns left into oncoming traffic without yielding loses the license, not just pays a fine. That doesn't happen either.

Driver training that treats motorcycles as full vehicles requiring the same distance judgment as cars. Most driver's ed barely mentions them.

What we're left with is rider training that says "assume you're invisible, ride defensively, escape-route plan every intersection" – which is sound advice and still isn't enough when a sedan turns directly into your path with no warning and no space to react.

The gap between training and survival

Rider training is real: intersection scanning, brake control, escape-route planning, and the reality that half the crashes that kill motorcyclists are caused by someone else's failure to yield. Riders are taught to wear full gear, to assume every car will turn in front of them, and to leave space they probably won't have.

And then they ride on roads where drivers make left turns without looking, where intersections have no protected phases, where the penalty for killing a motorcyclist is a ticket and a settlement. The training is real and the threat is faster.

Lomas and Louisiana, September 4. A rider doing nothing wrong, a driver who didn't yield, a helmet that protected the head but couldn't prevent the injuries that killed. That's not a training failure. That's the gap between what riders can control and what the road demands.

If you ride, treat every intersection like someone is about to turn in front of you – because statistically, someday, someone will. If you drive, look twice for motorcycles, and if you see one, wait. The rider you don't hit is someone's instructor, someone's parent, someone who made it home.

This one didn't.
